Pasadena to host virtual meeting on carbon-free electricity plan

Pasadena Water and Power has scheduled an online meeting later this month to brief the public on the utility’s plan to generate all electricity from carbon-free sources by 2030.

“Pasadena’s pathway to carbon-free electricity will be charted through a comprehensive Optimized Strategic Plan” that will be discussed at PWP’s first virtual meeting on Sept. 26 from 6-7:30 p.m. To attend the meeting, community members can go to PWPweb.com/OSP or call 669-444-9171 and use the webinar ID 878 4401 2192.

Officials described the OSP as a roadmap of actions and decisions to help PWP achieve the city’s 100% carbon-free goal by the end of 2030 while maintaining reliable service and limiting cost increases to customers.

“The OSP will consider how new generation resources, infrastructure investments and customer programs can facilitate the transition to Pasadena’s carbon-free goal,” according to a city statement.

The plan is being developed with the help of Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc., “a recognized leader in clean energy policy implementation,” officials said.

In August, PWP launched the Clean Energy Tracker, which displays the city’s carbon-free energy targets and milestones.

PWP is a publicly owned nonprofit administered by the city that delivers electricity to more than 65,000 customers within Pasadena. The utility also provides water to nearly 38,000 households and businesses in Pasadena and neighboring areas.
