HIBBING—Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland are observing National Boys & Girls Club Week, which started Monday and runs through June 28.

The Boys & Girls Club of Hibbing has special events planned all week, and is topping it off with an open house, from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, June 28 to showcase their new headquarters at Hibbing High School. To attend the open house, go into Door 9 at 800 East 21st Street at Hibbing High School.

Here are the daily events planned for this week:

    Monday- Jersey Day

    Tuesday- Superhero Day

    Wednesday-Wacky Wednesday (Crazy hair/hats)

Thursday-Beach Day (Wear your best beach outfit)

“Celebrated since 1941, National Boys & Girls Club Week recognizes the invaluable services that Clubs bring to communities and sharing how great futures start at Boys & Girls Clubs,” it states in a press release. “Boys & Girls Club Week 2024, promotes the fact that while Clubs operate on a local community level, they are also part of a growing national movement, and together we do whatever it takes to build great futures for America’s youth.”

On June 10 of this year the Hibbing branch reopened at its new location inside the high school, and now is operating under regular hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday for the summer months. The club was started in Spring 2021 and had formerly operated out of the Greenhaven Elementary in a different space provided by the Hibbing School District.

“This space is a great asset for the Boys & Girls Club of Hibbing,” Brittany Lindstrom, Development Director for the Boys & Girls Club of Hibbing told the Mesabi Tribune via email. “Making the move to the High School will go great things for increasing our Club’s teenage demographic. There are so many amazing programs, resources, and scholarships that are available for the older youth through BGC.”

“We’re thrilled with the new space, the school district through their restructuring, has been phenomenal in keeping in mind the Boys & Girls Club and the valuable service and programming that we provide,” Emily Burnside, Director of Operations for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland. “It’s a beautiful space, allows room for us to expand our programming and we’re really excited about being in the high school space.”

On average the Hibbing serves about 50 students per day, Burnside said. Hours of operation at the Hibbing branch are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Children from six to 18 are eligible for membership in the Boys & Girls Club. The cost is $20 per year, January through December. Scholarships are available, and no child is turned away due to inability to pay.

Operating under the umbrella of the established Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland, the Hibbing branch operations and activities are led and directed by a local Advisory Board, subsidiary to the branch’s Board of Directors, in order to ensure local leadership, ownership and local engagement. Guidance, oversight and support are provided by the professional staff and corporate board of directors at Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland.

Since 1971, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland (www.bgcnorth.org) has been in the forefront of youth development in Duluth and the surrounding area.

The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs is to empower and inspire all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as caring, productive, responsible citizens. In 2023, the Clubs served over 87,000 healthy meals and snacks, provided over 2,500 hours of tutoring and reached over 4,000 youth through memberships and community outreach programs.
