VIRGINIA—Following up their 11-7 win to start off Monday’s doubleheader, the Rock Ridge Thunder made it 2-0 on the week with a 7-4 win in game two over visiting Hibbing.

Kate Morley got the win in the circle, striking out five batters.

“It was an up and down game,” Rock Ridge head coach Ashley Samargia said. “Very similar to the first game. “Hibbing went up early and then we had to come back again. It felt like a close game the whole way through and we had a couple moments where we made things interesting and had to fight back.”

At the plate for the Thunder, Ayla Troutwine was 2-3 while Kyra Irwin was 2-2. Zoey Thyen, Brooklyn Smith, Morley, and Maddy Bartovich all collected a hit.

“Our younger hitters really came through for us which is really nice to see. The older girls have a good bit of experience so when the younger girls come up big it’s really exciting to see.”

Samargia also had praise for Bartovich’s play on the defensive side of things.

“She just had this really great, solid defensive play at second. She fielded a ball going right up the middle, covered the ground well and made the throw for the out at first. It was one of those plays where if she doesn’t make it, it felt like the tides could be turned in Hibbing’s favor. That play alone really stuck out for us on Monday night.”

Overcoming two tumultuous games against the Bluejackets, Samargia said it was a positive sign for her squad that they managed to buckle down and win both.

“When we needed it, the girls came through. We took a few bumps but the girls really know how to lock in when they need to and do what they do best.”

The Thunder travel to Grand Rapids for a two-game slate next Monday and host their final home series of the summer against Cherry on Monday, July 22.
