Passenger dead in northern Minnesota ATV rollover crash

A Hibbing man was killed in an ATV rollover crash in northern Minnesota Saturday.

First responders were dispatched to the report of an ATV crash on a trail in Balkan Township at around 3:40 p.m., according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

At the scene, deputies found an upright ATV with roof damage that indicated it had rolled over. The ATV had been driven by a 29-year-old Chisholm man. He was accompanied by one passenger — a 31-year-old Hibbing man — who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was taken to University Medical Center Mesabi-Fairview in Hibbing and was later released.

Neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing seatbelts or helmets at the time of the crash. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.
