IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — One person is dead and several juveniles are among the injured as the result of a crash on Interstate 40 on Saturday, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

At around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, troopers came to Mile Marker 156 on I-40 West after getting a report of a fatal crash.

Investigators say that  Justin Devon Wilson, 34, of Hickory, was driving a 2004 Subaru Forester in the left lane and struck a car hauler trailer being pulled by a 2022 Dodge Ram 3500.

The Dodge had run out of gas and pulled into the median, according to troopers. However, the trailer was still partially in the travel lanes and the crash caused the Subaru to collide with a 2023 Toyota RAV4 that was also driving on I-40 West.

Wilson died at the scene as a result of his injuries. EMS took three juveniles who were also inside the SUV to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Toyota and a passenger were taken by EMS to a local hospital as well with non-life-threatening injuries. The Dodge driver was not injured as a result of the crash.

Investigators say that neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash and that everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt. Charges are possible pending the completion of the investigation and consultation with the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office.
