The following submission is from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) and the City of Malibu entered into a mediation process in 2022 in the hope of achieving a fair and equitable unification, in other words, split into two school districts. This included the City of Malibu placing its 2017 Unification Petition on hold in favor of mediating the matter with the school district.
Santa Paula Man Found Guilty of 11 Firearm Felonies, Awaits Sentencing in Ventura Superior Court
A Santa Paula man has been found guilty by a jury of a multitude of firearms-related felonies, according to a release from District Attorney Erik Nasarenko. Refugio Cortez, born on July 18, 1986, faced convictions on July 17, 2024, for 11 felony counts related to the unlawful owning, possession, or control of firearms by a convicted felon, and a single count for a person prohibited from having ammunition. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced the verdict, which acquitted him of an additional misdemeanor count of identity theft.

The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center is now accepting applications from professional theater companies and performing arts organizations to rent its Mainstage during the upcoming 2025 season. Applications are welcomed for professionally produced musicals, plays, concerts and special arts events that reflect the Center’s reputation for providing high quality family entertainment. Production runs can range from one to five consecutive weekends. Concerts and Special Events can be one night or a series. Both established and emerging performing arts organizations are encouraged to apply.
