Press release from High Springs Fire Department

HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. – Just after 8 p.m. on the evening of July 4, the High Springs Fire Department was dispatched to 16311 NW SR 45 for a reported residential structure fire.

Firefighters arrived within minutes to find smoke and flames visible from the rear of the home.

Engine 29, led by Lt. Kim Wilson, was the first to arrive, pulling a hose line to the back door. Once inside, it was discovered the fire was located in a bedroom, behind a closed door. Lt. Wilson quickly made entry into the room to extinguish the blaze.

“Fortunately the door to the room that was involved was closed,” said Chief Joe Peters. “This is a great example of how keeping the door closed can stop the spread of a fire.”

Initial investigations indicate that the fire started from a set of Christmas lights left on a bag of clothes. The heat from the lights is believed to have ignited the clothing, causing the fire.

The High Springs Fire Department urges residents to take precautions with electrical decorations, ensuring they are not left on unattended or placed near flammable materials.

High Springs was assisted on-scene by Newberry Fire Department and Alachua County Fire Rescue. No injuries were reported.
