In Hinesburg, water ran across roads on Thursday morning, and the LaPlatte River near the Hinesburg Nursery School appeared swollen and brown as it spread across backyards and fields. A rain gauge at the town’s highway garage on Beecher Hill Road showed the area received 10 inches of rain, according to Todd Odit, the town manager.

Odit said he was not aware of any swiftwater rescues, evacuations or dangerously flooded homes in the town; roads took the brunt of the damage.

The water washed away a culvert on Beecher Hill Road, isolating the town garage. Even so, road crews were still able to begin work starting at around 9 a.m., Odit said.

The town has requested assistance from the Army Corps of Engineers, Odit said. He’s received requests from residents whose driveways have washed out, he said, but the town will need to prioritize main roads before they can make repairs for individuals.

“It’s going to be a while before we get to driveways,” he said.

At 10 a.m., at least nine roads were closed or impassable, according to the town’s website.

“We’re going to do the best we can with the resources we have to get access back to everyone,” he said.
