Lloyd Gene “Sarge” Ayers Lloyd Gene “Sarge” Ayers, 89, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at his home in Beckley, WV. Born July 26, 1934, in Summers County, WV, he was the youngest of eleven children of Charley Napolean and Sallie Leif Harris Ayers. Gene’s career was military, serving 20 years in the US Army as a military policeman, with overseas tours in Korea, France, Vietnam twice, and Thailand. (Hinton News) - Entry Deadlines for the 99th Annual State Fair of West Virginia are quickly approaching, with livestock due by midnight on July 6, 2024, and home, arts and garden by midnight July 12, 2024. "Seeing the hard work exhibitors put into their entries and projects is always a highlight of the State Fair," CEO Kelly Collins stated. "From the quilts, art, food, flowers, and vegetables in the West Virginia Building, to livestock exhibits in the barns, it is a tradition we hope to continue to grow for years to come." HINTON W.Va. (Hinton News) - UPDATE: According to the City of Hinton, the water company has recommended shutting down 2nd Avenue from James Street and Ballengee until crews can evaluate the situation. Additionally, City representatives states that water is cut off at this time and updates will be provided. Talcott man arrested following call for gunshots
Talcott W.Va. (Hinton News) - Officers were called to a residence in Talcott on June 26 at approximately 6 a.m. regarding someone discharging a firearm. While police were en route, a call was received that allegedly identified the individual as Joel Ross Thompson, 51, of Talcott. According to the criminal complaint, the caller who reported Thompson's identity reportedly stated that he had shot someone. After calling Thompson out of the residence, officers allegedly entered the home looking for gunshot victims and discovered 14 marijuana plants being grown. Additionally, the criminal complaint says some shell casings of multiple calibers were found on the floor along with several firearms in open view. The document, however, does not state that any victims were located. Officers report that the back door and Thompson's truck were "littered with bullet holes." The criminal complaint also notes that the residence is within 500 feet of three other homes. Thompson was subsequently arrested and at the time of writing is in Southern Regional Jail with his bail set at $25,500. ALDERSON W.Va. (Hinton News) - Summers County police responded to a call regarding alleged domestic violence in the area of Autumn Street in Alderson on June 24. Gov. Justice announces West Virginia Sexual Assault Forensic Examination grant award
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Hinton News) — Gov. Jim Justice announced today that he has awarded $150,000.00 in West Virginia Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) grant funds to the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services. Funding will be used to hire, retain, and train a statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) project coordinator who will provide technical assistance to SANEs and qualified medical providers; assist the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) Commission by reviewing training curricula, providing subject matter expertise, and participating in workgroups and activities as needed, and create training modules for qualified forensic examiners to meet the legislative rule requirements and training standards. Funds were awarded to the following: West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services – $150,000.00 This funding will be utilized to hire a statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) project coordinator.
