HINTON, WV (WVNS) – School security is vital in this day and age.

There are many dangers that can surface within schools, like school shootings, illegal drug usage, as well as school fights.

Many schools now have their own police officers on duty in case of emergency.

Sheriff’s Deputy Tad Withrow, the Prevention Resource Officer at Summers County Comprehensive High School, said it takes more than just himself to ensure the school’s safety.

“First and foremost, if you hear something, by all means, you know, report it to me. Report it to one of our staff members. That is one of the benefits of having a police officer in the school. I’m here and I can address it pretty quickly,” said Deputy Withrow.

With everyone buying in to the collective security of their schools, it will make for a much smoother school year.

Withrow also told 59News that he teaches classes like drug prevention to help the students at Summers County stay away from dangerous activities throughout their lives.
