COOK COUNTY, Ill. - Cook County issued a disaster proclamation Monday in response to the record number of tornadoes that hit the Chicago area in mid-July. A severe weather system, officially classified as a derecho, swept through northern Illinois and Indiana on July 15, bringing a total of 32 tornadoes. (SPRINGFIELD) A new state law will expand fentanyl education for grades 6-12 in Illinois schools beginning with the 2025-2026 academic year. It was last week that Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the non-partisan bill into law. The Illinois Department of Public Health says a lethal dose of fentanyl is smaller than a drop of water. Opioids containing fentanyl, along with several other drugs, are involved in 70% of most all fatal drug overdoses.
Brainard Avenue Resurfacing Project - Construction Update
Work on the resurfacing of Brainard Avenue has continued with the installation of asphalt binder from Ogden Avenue to 47th Street. Parking along the roadway on both sides will be restricted while this operation is occurring, which is expected to conclude by the end of the week. As a reminder, motorists should obey all construction signage and flaggers through the work zone. Please also note that traffic and crosswalk markings will be absent for the next two-three weeks.

CHICAGO - The Democratic National Convention will shut down several streets in downtown Chicago, disrupting the travel of locals and visitors making their way across the city. Although the convention kicks off on Monday, street closures will begin at 10 p.m. on Friday, outside McCormick Place and at 7 p.m. the next day surrounding the United Center.
Des Plaines River Trail renovations are complete
The renovation of a 4.4-mile stretch of the Des Plaines River Trail, which runs between Lawrence and Touhy Avenues, is officially complete. The $12.5 million project included the installation of a 1,000-foot elevated boardwalk in a section of the trail that is prone to flooding, as well a new pedestrian bridge over Lawrence Avenue.
