Barton, Central Kansas included in high-risk area for West Nile Virus
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) updates its West Nile Virus dashboard each Friday during surveillance season, which is July through September. Though West Nile cases in Kansas remain limited this year, and there have been no reported cases in Barton County, all of Central Kansas is still listed by KDHE in the highest-risk category. Barton County Health Department Nurse Sarah Schridde said there are ways to mitigate those risks.
KCAC tournaments no longer coming to Great Bend
The City of Great Bend and the Great Bend Recreation Commission announce that the KCAC Softball and Baseball Championship will no longer be held in Great Bend. The decision comes as a result of new leadership and revised strategic goals within the KCAC, which include selecting a location with more hotel accommodations and a more central position relative to the league's schools.

Be Well Barton County giving away bikes, helmets July 20
In 2022, a record 1,084 cyclists were killed in crashes with vehicles, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Tens of thousands more riders are injured each year while on their bicycles. That makes bicycle safety all the more important. Katelyn Sigler, educator at the Barton County Health Department, said Be Well Barton County is hosting a Bike Rodeo at Central Baptist Church, 3301 Lakin Ave. in Great Bend, on Saturday, July 20.
