Math teacher Katina Kitchens Lloyd taught at North & South Panola

The Panola County Chapter of the Rust College Alumni Association is currently raising funds to support an endowed scholarship at Rust College in Holly Springs in memory of Katina Kitchens Lloyd.

Lloyd, a native of Panola County, was a graduate of Rust College with a degree in mathematics. She was an exemplary and compassionate teacher at North Panola High in Sardis for 13 years and South Panola High in Batesville for seven years before her untimely death in 2009.

She was stricken while teaching a South Panola class on April 23, 2009, and later passed away at a Memphis hospital. Lloyd, just 36 at the time of her death, had been named one of four finalists for Mississippi Teacher of the Year in 2008.

She was the daughter of veteran South Panola school teachers Norva and Roosevelt Kitchens. A National Board Certified Teacher, she was the wife of Marvin Lloyd. She also left five daughters, Halle, Haley, Bianca, Brandyce and Domonique.

“ “I guess you could say I was destined to be a teacher the day I was born,” Lloyd once told The Panolian in an interview.

Students attending Rust College, from Panola County, with a major in education, may apply for the scholarship. For more information, contact Percy Bruce, longtime Panola County educator who also taught the scholarship honoree.

“We welcome the public’s support in continuing the legacy of Mrs. Katina Kitchens Lloyd,” Bruce said. “She provided support, encouragement, and advice to help students navigate academic and personal challenges.
