California High School Teacher Administers Offensive And Racist Biology Exam

A Sacramento high school biology teacher was suspended after being administered a test that named and mocked students for being crossed-eyed along with making racist remarks.
Alex Nguyen, a teacher at Luther Burbank High School for over ten years, came under scrutiny after distributing a biology final that targeted specific students by their full names, describing their body types and ethnic backgrounds. The test was given to three classes before being withdrawn from the fourth, the Daily Mail reported. One question read: “In high school, there are individuals who are cross-eyed like [Student’s Name] and [Other Student’s Name], which is a dominant trait. We call those individuals ‘weirdoes’. So, if you crossed two weirdoes [Both Students], that are heterozygous for being cross-eyed, what is the offspring that would result?”
Another question perpetuated racial stereotypes: “ For some reason, the African American culture has influenced most of the student body. How? In African Americans, they have a gene for the pimp walk, which is dominant. What is the result if you cross [Student Name] homozygous dominant Latina with a homozygous recessive Hmong like [Other Student Name]?” The test also included personal vendettas against students allegedly sleeping in class, asking about genetic outcomes if they mated.
Despite Nguyen claiming he did not promote sexual activity among students, Principal Jim Peterson intervened and confiscated the exams. However, he continued administering the test through a projector screen, causing further outrage. The following day, Nguyen was replaced by a substitute teacher. Students received their grades for the exam, with one student claiming they received a zero, which lowered his average to a D, affecting his eligibility for the school baseball team. His parents opposed the grade, describing Nguyen as difficult and often cruel regarding excused absences.
In response to the incident, the school district said, “ We will evaluate the exams of the students who received the test, and our Academic Department will contact students whose final grade has been impacted.” Nguyen has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
