Paris Olympics: Italy’s Angela Carini Forfeits Match Against Algeria’s Imane Khelif, Who Failed Gender Test

Angela Carini decided to end the most significant battle of her career in a mere 46 seconds after enduring a series of powerful punches from Algerian boxer Imane Khelif.

Khelif, who did not pass a gender eligibility test in 2023, has been granted permission to participate in the competition in Paris, which has sparked controversy online. In a match on Thursday, 25-year-old Angela Carini, representing Italy, went up against 25-year-old Imane Khelif. However, the fight didn’t last long at all, with Carini calling it quits less than halfway through the first round. According to TMZ, in the previous year, a prominent boxing organization disqualified Imane from competing in the gold medal match of the 2023 World Championships due to a failed gender test revealing elevated testosterone levels. Additionally, the testing revealed that Khelif possessed XY chromosomes, usually found in males, contrary to the typical two X chromosomes (XX) found in females.

After the fight, Carini shared her thoughts on the experience and explained the reasons behind her decision to forfeit the fight. “I felt a severe pain in my nose, and with the maturity of a boxer, I said ‘Enough,’ because I didn’t want to, I couldn’t finish the match.”

Carini, who is no longer in the running for a medal, expressed that she did not feel qualified to determine whether Khelif should be allowed to compete against women.

“I am not here to judge or pass judgment,” Angela said.

“If an athlete is this way, and in that sense it’s not right or it is right, it’s not up to me to decide. I just did my job as a boxer. I got into the ring and fought. I did it with my head held high and with a broken heart for not having finished the last kilometer.”
