Vera Lidell, the former Director of Food Services for the Harvey School District in Dolton, Illinois, received a significant nine-year prison sentence for her involvement in a substantial food theft operation that has left many in disbelief. At 68 years old, Lidell pleaded guilty to orchestrating a scheme that resulted in the theft of approximately $1.5 million worth of food, primarily chicken wings.
An audit revealed a shocking financial discrepancy, indicating that the district was hundreds of thousands of dollars over budget just halfway through the fiscal year. During court proceedings, Lidell’s actions were characterized as a “massive fraud,” especially since the stolen food was intended to provide meals for local children who were learning remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While there is a consensus that Lidell should be held accountable for her actions, many feel that a nine-year sentence for stealing chicken wings is excessively harsh. The story of the chicken wing heist quickly went viral on social media, capturing the attention of Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, 30. He publicly vowed to assist Lidell, stating, “I’ll pay for the wings that she stole to get her free,” on the platform X.
Jones, who recently signed a lucrative contract with the Chiefs, has garnered praise for his kind-hearted gesture, even though the legal system operates independently of such offers. One X user tweeted,
“Yeah 9 years is crazy when r*pists, pedos, and murderers get less time. She still needs to pay for her crime though. She didn’t do this by accident. We all were hurting during Covid.
