Ashlyn Watkins, a prominent player on the South Carolina women’s basketball team, was taken into custody on charges of kidnapping and assault on Saturday in Columbia, South Carolina, according to multiple outlets.

Details surrounding the incident remain vague, but it is alleged that Watkins “forcefully” grabbed the victim’s face, yanked her arms, and shoved her at a student housing facility on the university’s campus. Furthermore, a warrant obtained by WLTX19 claims she “held the victim’s head and compelled her to walk down the hallway,” thereby restricting her movements and preventing her from escaping. According to the report, the woman managed to get away and pull a fire alarm. She then received medical attention for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Following the incident, Watkins faced charges of first-degree assault and battery, as well as kidnapping. She has since been released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court in October. South Carolina has reportedly acknowledged the arrest and is in the process of collecting information but has yet to issue an official statement.

Watkins is beginning her third season with the Gamecocks, having averaged 9.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game during her sophomore year, contributing to the team’s success in securing a national championship. Last season, South Carolina finished with an undefeated record of 38-0, defeating Iowa in the championship game to earn their second title in three years.

The Gamecocks are scheduled to kick off their season on November 10 against North Carolina State.
