On Wednesday morning, tragedy struck Apalachee High School in Georgia when a shooting incident claimed the lives of two teachers and two students, according to police reports.

The shooter, a 14-year-old student named Colt Gray, has been confirmed by Chris Hosey, the director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Shortly after the shooting began at approximately 10:20 a.m., a school resource officer swiftly intervened and confronted the suspect, who promptly surrendered, as reported by Hosey.

In addition to the fatalities, nine individuals sustained gunshot injuries and were hospitalized, among them a math teacher who suffered a severe hip injury. At least two of the wounded were transported by air to receive medical care. According to Hosey, Gray will face adult charges of murder. Reports from CNN indicate that approximately 30 more individuals may have been affected by the shooting.

Lyela Sayarath, 16, shared with CNN that the accused shooter sat beside her during algebra class. She noted that he left the class early, around 9:45 a.m., but didn’t ask for a bathroom pass, leading her to suspect he might be skipping. Towards the end of the class, she heard an announcement instructing her teacher to check their email. Shortly thereafter, Lyela recounted that Gray was standing outside the closed classroom door. When another student approached the door and saw that he was armed, she jumped back in shock.

“I guess he saw we weren’t gonna let him in,” Lyela said. “And I guess the classroom next to me, their door was open, so I think he just started shooting in the classroom.”

Initially, she told CNN that she heard a rapid series of gunfire—approximately 10 to 15 shots—followed by a continuous stream of shots.

According to Lyela, students fell to the floor and crawled into the corner for safety.

“It seemed like this wasn’t something he planned too well or that he wasn’t really strong with the gun because he didn’t try and shoot our door. Once he saw he couldn’t get in our room, he just went to the next one.”
