UHMC launches wastewater certificate addressing labor demand for cesspool conversions
This fall, the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College is launching an Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Specialist Certificate. More than 52 million gallons of wastewater seep out of cesspools and into the ground and groundwater in Hawaiʻi every day, with more than 88,000 cesspools still operational across the Hawaiian Islands. Twelve thousand are on Maui, according to the state Department of Health.
$4.9M to fund Hawaiʻi’s first teacher apprenticeships
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s College of Education is set to play an important role in a groundbreaking initiative to address Hawaiʻi’s teacher shortage. Pukalani resident Virgilio ‘Billy’ Cabebe celebrates 100th birthday
Earlier this week, Hula Grill Kāʻanapali hosted the 100th birthday celebration for its longtime guest and friend, Pukalani resident Virgilio “Billy” Cabebe. Born on July 25, 1924, to Luis and Constancia Cabebe, Mr. Cabebe is one of six siblings. In 1947, Virgilio moved to Oʻahu at 20 years old to work in the sugar industry. Three years later, he began working in the restaurant business at the Wagon Wheel restaurant in Waikīkī, then at Buzz’s Steak and Lobster. He relocated to Maui in 1975.
UH to expand climate monitoring coverage across the Pacific
The University of Hawaiʻi is expanding its climate data research into the Pacific, according to a Thursday news release. University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa men’s golfers Josh Hayashida, Kolbe Irei and Tyler Ogawa were named to the 2023–24 NCAA Division I Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars list. Ogawa, a junior from Honolulu, made the list for the second consecutive year while Irei, a senior from Honolulu, was selected for the second time after being named to the list in 2021–22 while a member of UC Irvine men’s golf team.
