Signed into law nearly 60 years ago, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination in the U.S. based on “race, color, sex, religion, or national origin.”. Yet, as a historian who studies social movements and political change, I think the law’s most important lesson for today’s movements is not its content but rather how it was achieved.

Beeson Divinity School names Timothy Tennent new Methodist Chair of Divinity
Samford University’s Beeson Divinity School is pleased to announce Timothy Tennent as its new Methodist Chair of Divinity. For the past 15 years, Tennent has been serving as the president of Asbury Theological Seminary. Prior to 2009, he served 11 years as the professor of world missions and Indian studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He has also spent extensive time teaching around the world, especially in India. Tennent began his ministry as a Methodist pastor in Georgia.

Mountain Brook community holds memorial in honor of longtime football coach
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Monday the Mountain Brook community said goodbye to a man many say will be remembered for the impact he had. Mountain Brook high school football announced on social media, the passing of longtime Assistant Football Coach Michael Thorsen. During Monday night’s memorial there was plenty of love to go around for the marine veteran. Head Coach Chris Yeager calls him a man for the ages.
UAB breaks ground on $190 million facility
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has broken ground on a $190 million facility for the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine and the College of Arts and Sciences. The Biomedical Research and Psychology Building will house research faculty from the Heersink School of Medicine and the Department of Psychology.

Woodfin Names Veteran FBI Agent Deputy Chief of Investigations at Birmingham Police Department
Mayor Randall L. Woodfin has appointed a 22-year veteran of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as Deputy Chief of Investigative Operations at the Birmingham Police Department. Jeffrey J. Brown, who retired as Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the Birmingham Field Office of the FBI, will join the department later this month.
