    It’s been a deadly month on Honolulu’s roads

    HONOLULU (KHON2) — On July 18 at around 2:05 a.m., a tragic accident happened on Kamehameha Highway in Kaneohe.

    According to Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, a 75-year-old man was driving northbound when he hit a 32-year-old woman who was walking partially on the road.

    After she was hit, another unknown vehicle, possibly a commercial dump truck, struck her as she lay on the road, said police.

    HPD said the woman died at the scene. The 75-year-old driver stayed at the site and was not injured.

    This is the 22nd traffic death on Oahu in 2024, compared to 28 at the same time in 2023.

    July has been a deadly month in Honolulu.

    On July 16, 2024, the Honolulu Police Department said they were informed by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office that a 78-year-old man, who was in a critical accident on July 10, had died.

    On that day, police said the man was riding a moped on King Street when he tried to change lanes and collided with a car driven by a 47-year-old man.

    The moped rider was thrown onto the road and suffered head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, according to HPD.

    On July 15, 2024, police said they learned that a 33-year-old woman involved in a single-car crash on July 2 had passed away.

    She was driving fast on Paakea Road when she lost control, hit a utility pole and her car flipped over several times, catching fire, according to HPD.

    Police said she was not wearing a seatbelt and had to be rescued from the burning car.

    On July 14, 2024, HPD said a crash occurred on Kaukonahua Road. An unidentified man and his passenger were driving when the car veered off the road, then back onto it, crashing head-on with a 41-year-old woman’s car, according to police.

    The passenger died at the scene, while the driver and the woman were taken to the hospital, said HPD.

    On July 12, 2024, police said a fatal accident happened near Ala Moana Boulevard and Queen Street.

    According to HPD, a 51-year-old woman hit an unidentified man who was crossing the road outside a crosswalk.

    On July 10, 2024, HPD said a 74-year-old man lost control of his car at the intersection of East Manoa Road and Oʻahu Avenue.

    His car collided with a 71-year-old woman’s car. The man was critically injured and later died at the hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt and might have had a medical issue at the time, according to police.

    On July 9, 2024, police said a 66-year-old man was hit by a car while crossing Kapolei Parkway outside a crosswalk.

    The driver, a 52-year-old man, stayed at the scene, according to HPD.

    These incidents show the importance of road safety and the tragic impact of accidents on Oahu’s community.
