BPD says K-9 unit located fentanyl, methamphetamine in vehicle following traffic stop
The Bethel Police Department (BPD) said that it seized fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cash following an Aug. 6 traffic stop. According to a charging document filed in Bethel Superior Court, 32-year-old Jonnelle Laraux was initially pulled over for having improperly displayed and expired tags. During the traffic stop, she allegedly told police her name was Kristy Nick and was arrested after the traffic stop for driving with an expired license under the name Kristy Nick. But police say that Laraux had given officers a false name, which was discovered when she was taken to the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center.
Health center offering free vaccines ahead of school year
The Cordova Public Health Center announced it would be offering a free back-to-school vaccine clinic next week for kids gearing up for the fall semester. The clinic — which will vaccinate school-aged kids for free from Aug. 12-14 — will offer a variety of vaccinations free of charge, including but not limited to varicella, MMR, DTaP, and polio. School starts Aug. 21.
MMIP advocates run for healing and justice
Nearly 400 people turned out for a 5K run and walk to raise awareness about Alaska’s missing and murdered Indigenous people in Anchorage on Saturday. The runners and walkers gathered at Goose Lake for the annual “Run for Healing, Run for Justice” event. Organizers say there were two main goals -- to honor the victims and a call to action to end the MMIP crisis.
American Seafoods relaunches $150K grant program for Western Alaska
American Seafoods Group relaunched its grant program last week, now known as the American Seafoods Community Partnership Program. American Seafoods is the largest at-sea processor of wild Alaska pollock and hake in the U.S. and is based in Seattle, Washington. The program provides donations to organizations and groups in Western Alaska to fund community projects that address food security and other needs and will provide almost double the amount in grant funding under the new name.

Building at center of Eielson Street fire ‘a total loss,” fire chief says
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - A structure fire at an abandoned house on Eielson Street in Fairbanks led occupants of a neighboring home to evacuate Saturday morning. “There weren’t any injuries or casualties, but the one building was a total loss, and the secondary building did sustain some fire damage from that initial fire,” Fairbanks Fire Department Fire Chief Andrew Coccaro said.
