HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — Multiple school zones within the City of Hopewell are getting speed cameras, with citations to be issued starting late August.

According to a July 16 press release from the city, these speed cameras are being installed to protect students and improve road safety. They will be installed outside of Carter G. Woodson Middle School, Harry E. James Elementary School and Hopewell High School.

A 30-day warning period will begin in these school zones starting Monday, July 29.

“This grace period will allow drivers to adjust their behavior,” the release reads. “During this time, violators will receive warnings instead of citations. This grace period aims to educate drivers and encourage compliance with speed limits, enhancing safety without immediate penalties.”

Beginning Aug. 28, drivers will be cited for speeding violations. According to the release, each citation will cost the driver $100.

“Community safety is a shared responsibility,” said Hopewell Mayor Johnny Partin in the release. “By supporting this initiative, we are making our school zones safer for everyone. The warning period is essential for raising awareness and helping drivers adapt to the new enforcement measures.”

The cameras are being provided and will be managed by the company Altumint, according to the release.

The company’s CEO, Holly Cooper, said in the release that similar camera initiatives in other Virginia localities resulted in a 75% decrease in speeding violations within three months.
