      The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for not only Tuesday afternoon, but most of the week for at least 10 counties in North East Texas, including Hopkins County. Excessive heat warning are issued when heat indexes are 100-112 degrees; and heat advisories when heat indexes are projected at 105-109 degrees.

    According to the National Weather Service, the temperature reached only 97.9 in Sulphur Springs between 4 and 6 p.m. July 1. with humidity around 35-40%, for a heat index of 102.

    Heat advisories were upgraded to excessive heat warnings this week for Sulphur Springs, Hopkins and across at least 10 counties in Northeast Texas.

    Temperatures were predicted from noon to 7 p.m. to be just shy of 100, with heat indexes up between 110 and 112 degrees entering the dog days of summer.

    Residents and those working and participating in outdoor activities during these extremely hot times are urged to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. The NWS recommends:

    „ Drink plenty of water, even if not thirsty.

    „ Take frequent rest breaks in shade or air conditioning.

    „ Wear lightweight, light-colored loose clothing.

    „ Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
