Mayor James R. Knight Jr. wants local residents to nominate individuals for awards that will “recognize and celebrate unsung heroes who make our community great,” his office announced Monday.

The inaugural Mayor’s Community Awards will be open for nominations until 2 p.m. July 26. Honorees representing five categories — small business, nonprofits, volunteers, education and city employees — will be named.

Nomination forms are available online or at the Hopkinsville Municipal Center, 715 S. Virginia St.

“Each nomination will include a brief essay (no more than 250 words) detailing why the nominee deserves the award,” a press release states. “We are specifically looking for those individuals or organizations who diligently work to improve our community without seeking recognition.”

A five-member committee comprised of City Administrative Coordinator Diane Turner, another city employee and one representative each for small business, nonprofits and education will review applications and provide a list of finalists to Knight, who will make the final selection.

The winners will be recognized at a reception in August.
