HORSEHEADS, N.Y. ( WETM ) – More than 100 Vietnam-era veterans were honored at a pinning ceremony on July 2 to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the Vietnam War.

One by one they came up to the stage to receive their commemorative pins from Congressman Nick Langworthy. Several local leaders praised the veterans and their service, including WETM News Director Jim Turpin, Assemblyman Phil Palmesano and State Senator Tom O’Mara.

“Upon returning from Vietnam, you faced a divided nation and often did not receive the proper respect, indignity and recognition that you deserved. As your representative in congress, I am deeply proud to play a role in a small way righting that wrong today. We stand here as a grateful nation to say welcome home and thank you,” said Congressman Nick Langworthy.

“We recognize that the words we say here today and the actions we take here today really do no justice to the debt of gratitude and thanks we owe to you,” said Assemblyman Phil Palmesano.

“During the Vietnam War, the ending of the war and after the war. The way our veterans were treated was despicable. It was a dark day in our country’s history, one we hope to never repeat,” said State Senator Tom O’Mara.

The Crystal Chords acapella group sang the national anthem and local scout troops recited the pledge of allegiance.
