Trailing 14-0 in the first quarter, the Houston Middle School 8th-grade football team rallied and led 30-20 in the third period before ultimately being defeated 34-30 in the season-opener Thursday at Thayer.

The host Bobcats scored on the opening kickoff and got another touchdown in the first quarter following a fumble. After Houston’s big comeback, Thayer regained the lead with less the 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Tigers’ offense then marched down the field and were in the red zone, but moved back due to an untimely block-in-the back penalty.

Houston’s last play was an empty set shot to the end zone that was bobbled and then picked off by Thayer as time expired.

Tucker Venn had three rushing touchdowns for the Tigers and Matt Wilson ran for two, while Jason McGowan had two interceptions.

Thayer didn’t have enough players to field a 7 th -grade team.

Both Houston squads play next Thursday at Mountain Grove.
