Houston Astro Draft TMU Pitcher In 14th Round Of MLB Draft

Ryan Mathiesen of The Master’s University (TMU) was drafted Tuesday by the Houston Astros in the 14th Round of the 2024 MLB Draft.

While Mathiesen made plays at third base, on the mound and as a power hitter, the Astros are set to use his talents as a pitcher.

Consistently throwing in the mid-90s and even getting up to 97 MPH, there is no wonder why Houston wants to keep him on the mound where he can continue to flourish and develop his skills.

“I am so excited and eager to begin this next stage of life that the Lord has blessed me with,” said Mathiesen in an interview with the TMU Athletic Department. “I am so thankful that he led me to TMU, which through his Grace and the many lifelong relationships that he’s built, has prepared me for this new journey. Thank you to the Astros for giving me the opportunity to continue my baseball career at the next level. I’m excited to get to work and start my pro ball journey.”

The Los Gatos native transferred from Cabrillo Community College to TMU during his junior campaign. After joining the Mustangs, Mathiesen made his presence felt by becoming an All-GSAC selection and earning the title of conference Player of the Week on three occasions.

The three-time conference Player of the Week received these accolades through his performance on the field, which included a 6-2 record, 13 saves, 55 strikeouts and only 15 runs allowed over the span of two seasons.

On Friday, Mathiesen is set to be at the Astros’ spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he will most likely start playing in the Florida Complex League.
