The Houston Texans are exactly one week away from kicking off the preseason against the Chicago Bears and one player in particular continues to turn heads on the field during training camp.

Texans' head coach DeMeco Ryans has been preaching toughness and effort to his players since being named to the position last offseason and one rookie has shown each of those qualities each and every day since arriving this summer.

That rookie is second-round cornerback Kamari Lassiter, who is well on his way toward securing the starting job opposite Derek Stingley Jr . by doing all the right things.

“He’s locked in focused, intense, and you don’t notice it much because he’s always doing his job,” Ryans said earlier this week. “He’s always where he should be. He’s always in position. As a rookie, that says a lot. He’s exactly the guy we saw from the Georgia film. Dialed in. A lot of people call him a dawg; he’s a dawg.”

Following Thursday's practice session, the Texans social team posted a telling clip that showed Ryans continuing to gush over Lassiter on the practice field.

The Texans had high expectations for Lassiter coming into his rookie season after selecting him in the second-round, but no one expected him to develop as quickly as he has this offseason.

“He could be ready. He might even be ready now,” star wide receiver Stefon Diggs said on Monday. “Technique is sound, seeking knowledge, wants to compete at a high level, and he ain’t running from it. I’m talking my junk to him a little bit, just to get him going, and he’s right there. He’s standing 10 toes down. Something you like to see in young players is that confidence.”

Lassiter's confidence, work ethic and high level of play on the field has him as the easy favorite to already lock up the starting No. 2 cornerback position and his eager mindset continues to make him one of the brightest players shining at camp.

"I feel like I have a long way to go," Lassiter said. "I feel like to get to the point where I really want to be at, I have a long way to go. I have a lot to learn, I have a lot to work on. Right now is okay, but I want to be a lot better."

Lassiter is already well ahead of the curve in that regard after a strong offseason thus far and he'll only continue to get better by lining up against Diggs, Nico Collins, Tank Dell and the rest of the Texans top weapons in the passing game along with a quarterback like C.J. Stroud throwing the ball .

"It just makes me so much better," Lassiter explained. "My technique has to be sound every play. It's a 2-on-1. It's 1-on-1 with the receiver and then I got another matchup with the quarterback, and the quarterback is elite. If I make one wrong step or I think too long, the rep might be over... Those guys are elite, so I have to be elite too."
