Akili McDowell, known for his title role in David Makes Man , has been arrested and charged with murder in Houston, TX, in the shooting death of a man last month in an apartment complex parking lot.

The 21-year-old McDowell was arrested and booked on August 1 on charges of murder and theft, according to Harris County Sheriff’s Office online records. He has a court appearance Tuesday on the theft charge and on October 9 for the murder charge.

“On July 20, 2024, Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an incident that occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 13503 North Thorntree, near Wallisville and Uvalde (East Harris County), according to a statement by Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Ed Gonzalez. ” An adult male (possibly in his 20s) sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Suspect(s) fled the scene.”

The dead man was later identified as 20-year-old Cesar Peralta.

“The investigation is on-going and we encourage anyone with info to contact the Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100,” said Gonzalez.

McDowell is known for his lead role as David in OWN’s David Makes Man. He also appeared in a guest-starring role as Savion Williams in Billions , as well as the role of Zavier Gibbs in The Astronaut Wives Club.

Created by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney ( Moonlight ), David Makes Man , loosely based on McCraney’s own experiences, starred McDowell as the titular 14-year-old prodigy from the projects who was haunted by the death of his closest friend.

The show premiered in 2019 and was renewed for a second season, which aired in 2021. It was neither canceled nor renewed for a third season. It received numerous accolades during its first season, including  Critics Choice Award and Gotham Award nominations.

McDowell spoke with Oprah Winfrey about landing the starring role in a 2019 interview, which you can view below.
