The story first broke Monday (August 5), but details were scarce. Now it appears that we are getting a clearer picture of exactly what led to McDowell being arrested and charged with murder.
According to investigators, on July 20, Cesar Peralta went to the complex to purchase drugs from McDowell, who neighbors reportedly refer to as the “weed man.”
A dispute of sorts took place, which led to a fistfight and later, gunfire. By the time deputies arrived, Peralta, age 20, was found suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In court Tuesday, McDowell stated that he was struggling financially and had a public defender.
“This is an unfortunate situation and I am in prayer for Akili and those impacted by this tragedy,” his manager, Jonell Whitt, said in a statement per The Associated Press .
