HUBBARD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) – Hubbard Township trustees are dropping one of two levies that were set to appear on the November ballot.

According to Trustee Rick Hernandez, the board voted unanimously to remove a 1.75 mil renewal levy. It would have generated $163,000 a year.

The 2001 levy was needed for operations, but Hernandez said trustees are confident that the $1.9 million carryover from 2023 to 2024 is adequate for hiring and capital expenditures.

“We’ve been very fiscally responsible with the money. We just felt that with the current conditions, and with the carryover and the current levy and property taxes coming in, we are doing just fine in the police division and can move toward hiring and expenditures and save the residents money,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez said property tax increases have hit everyone hard and in Hubbard Township, that is being felt more profoundly due to an error in the first half that didn’t include the 5.5 mil school levy, so property owners are trying to catch up.

“We just looked at this as a whole, and we felt it was the right thing to do to give back — a tax holiday. The homeowner will see a reduction in their property taxes with this,” Hernandez said.

A second levy from 2019 will appear on November’s ballot. That levy generates $182,000 yearly.
