Julia Roberts, 56, has finally opened up about the devastating loss of her ex-boyfriend. Weeks ago, Matthew Perry, 54, was found unresponsive in a hot tub, in his Los Angeles home.

Although Perry's cause of death is still "inconclusive", coroners found no sign of drug use.

It took Roberts time to process the "sudden passing" of her castmate and ex-boyfriend. And, in a recent interview, Roberts reflected on their 3-month fling in the mid-nineties.

Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry's Relationship

In an interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Roberts reflected on the sudden loss of Perry, who died in October of this year.

“The sudden passing of anybody so young is heartbreaking...“I think that, you know, it just helps all of us just appreciate what we have and to keep going in a positive way as best we can.”

During the 1990s, Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry found themselves in a short-lived romance that left a lasting impact on both their personal lives and careers. At the time, Roberts made a guest appearance on the popular TV show "Friends," in which Perry portrayed the beloved character Chandler Bing. Their relationship coincided with Roberts' involvement in the show, adding an extra layer of connection between them.

It's "all good thoughts and feelings” said Roberts, when reflecting on her cameo appearance on Friends.

“They were all so welcoming to me as just a kind of a one-off character, and it was a really fun time."

Matthew Speaks About Roberts in His Memoirs

In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry wrote about his excitement about meeting and later dating Roberts. But, how his insecurities ultimately lead to the relationship's demise.

“Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me... I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts.”

Despite ending the relationship, Perry wrote he was giddy during their short time together.

“I sent her three dozen red roses and the card read: ‘The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I finally have an excuse to send you flowers."

    A Legacy of Laughter

Throughout the filming of Friends, Perry struggled with addiction. And, once said he'd like to be remembered for "making a difference", rather than his comedic prowess as Chandler Bing.

And, Perry looks back at his brief romance with Roberts fondly, writing it seemed as though she "was placed on this planet to make the world smile."

"In particular, me. I was grinning like some 15-year-old on his first date.”

In his honor, Perry’s family started the Matthew Perry Foundation, a charity fund designed to help struggling addicts.
