    Driver who fled scene of deadly wreck arrested: Huntersville Police

    HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A driver accused of fleeing the scene of a deadly wreck in Huntersville Tuesday night was arrested after being tracked down by a K-9 and is now facing a slew of charges, Huntersville Police said Wednesday.

    Officers responded to calls regarding the accident around 8 p.m. along Statesville Road near MT. Holly-Huntersville Road.

    A 20-year-old female driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, and another driver was transported to Atrium Hospital in Charlotte with life-threatening injuries.

    A third driver, identified as Michael Benjamin, 31, was located by a Huntersville Police K-9 Unit a short time after attempting to flee the crash scene, officers said.

    Benjamin faces multiple charges including:

    • Felony death by vehicle,
    • Felony hit-and-run involving serious injury and/or death
    • Driving while impaired
    • Resisting, delaying, and obstructing a police officer.

    An initial investigation stated that speed and alcohol impairment are considered to be factors. The actual cause of the deadly wreck remains under investigation. Three vehicles were involved.
