HUNTINGTON/MORGANTOWN, WV (WOWK) – Two universities in the Mountain State are getting national funding for research initiatives.

According to U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) – the National Science Foundation is giving the projects a combined total of $656,814. The funds will be split between Marshall University and West Virginia University.

“The National Science Foundation has been a terrific partner to the Mountain State for years and these awards are proof of that,” said Manchin. “These investments will support a ten-week program for STEM students at Marshall University and in-depth research into the challenges that socioeconomically disadvantaged graduate students endure in order to help increase college completion. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources that bolster academic research and support our universities across West Virginia.”

Manchin’s office says the funding will be shared between the universities as follows:

    • $352,310 to Marshall University – (REU) Site: Safety Analysis and Design Nexus: Bridging theory and practice
      • The funds will support a 10-week interactive research program designed to engage STEM students with a variety of hands-on learning opportunities and career workshops.
    • $304,504 to West Virginia University – (NSF) Division of Social and Economic Studies (SBE/SES)
      • The funding will go toward research designed to assess the obstacles that socioeconomically disadvantaged graduate students face as well as the effects those disadvantages have on student retention.
