The threat of strong storms returns Wednesday

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The heat and humidity have been persistent across the Deep South for the start of the week, with highs Monday and Tuesday rising into the upper 90s and low 100s.
For the first time in many days, the chance for showers and isolated storms returns Wednesday afternoon.
On Wednesday a cold front will drop south through the Tennessee Valley.
The cold front will lead to a mesoscale convective system (MCS) pushing through the region. An MCS is a meteorological term that means a cluster of intense thunderstorms. The cluster of storms can be linear or round.
Rain chances will gradually increase into the afternoon as the front approaches the region. The complex of storms may weaken before getting into our region, however, that same complex of storms may spark an outflow boundary which can lead to thunderstorms erupting in our area. An outflow boundary is a boundary of cool air which can interact with the hot and humid air ahead of it to trigger storms.
The combination of instability and a hot and humid airmass in place will support the threat of isolated strong to severe storms during the afternoon and evening hours. This will not be a widespread threat, but it’s important to be aware of rapidly changing weather conditions.
The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted the area under a ‘Marginal Risk’ (level 1 out 5) for isolated strong to severe storm development.
Frequent lightning, strong winds over 50 mph, and hail will be the main threats from storms that develop. With plenty of moisture in place, tropical-like downpours will also be possible. On average, rain totals will range from 0.50 to 0.75 inches with isolated higher amounts possible.
If you have any outdoor plans stay weather aware and have multiple ways of receiving weather alerts!
