HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s (USSRC) movie career is blasting off! The iconic museum is once again being featured in a major new movie project.

Several scenes from the upcoming Amazon Prime movie, “ Space Cadet ” were shot on-location at the USSRC.

Pat Ammons, the Senior Director of Public and Media Relations for the USSRC told News 19 that this isn’t the first time a movie or TV show has filmed on the property.

“We’ve had so many things filmed here over the years it’s hard to keep track” Ammons said.

However, the excitement of seeing a scene be filmed, and the end up in the final film never gets old.

“It’s just fun to watch and see all these great spots around the center and go, ‘wait, I know that’!” she added.

Ammons said while the U.S. Space & Rocket Center isn’t part of the plot of the film, it provided the perfect backdrop for the movie.

“They were looking for the perfect place for the lead role, Emma Roberts, to train like an astronaut,” she said. “So this was the perfect location and it was just a lot of fun to see it all come together.”

Ammons couldn’t divulge too many secrets from the movie shoot, but she was able to tell us some of the filming locations around the U.S. Space & Rocket Center property.

She said a scene was shot inside the INTUITIVE ® Planetarium, the underwater astronaut trainer tank, the iconic Saturn V rocket outside, the Saturn V hall inside, and more.

Eagle-eyed Space Camp alumni should also keep their eyes peeled for some familiar faces in the final film. Ammons said one Space Camp member stepped up as an extra, and even made the final cut!

“I was looking for an extra to drive a golf cart, we put him in a green flight suit and he drove back and forth across the park for hours,” she said. “We’ve got about 2 seconds of Cody in the movie!”

Ammons said while the list of TV and movie projects shot on-location at the USSRC is growing, she’s always pleased to get the word out about what’s going on right here in the Rocket City.

“So, it’s a great way to share our space camp program,” she said. “I love the fact that [Space Camp] alumni from all over the world will watch this and say, ‘Hey, wait a minute, I’ve been there’!”

The movie filmed its on-location scenes in Huntsville in the fall of 2022. It was delayed in its release date due to the writer’s strike.

It will be available for streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime on July 4th, 2024.
