HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Senior tenants who live in the Mayfair Towers housing complex met with Huntsville City Councilman Bill Kling to discuss the next steps in getting the maintenance issues resolved.

Tenants say issues at the apartment building are accumulating and that those issues have been ignored for quite some time. News 19 has covered several issues at the building, like faulty air conditioning units, broken washing machines, water leaks and rodents.

Resident Carol Harris says that she does all that she can to help her fellow tenants.

“They can’t change light bulbs up in the ceiling and things, and so I’ve been trying to do some of that because we don’t have any maintenance here that takes care of it,” Harris explained.

As previously reported, there has been no manager in the building and no full-time maintenance technician for quite some time.

The buildings management company, Redwood Communities, is the same company that ignored the maintenance issues at the Russel Erskine apartments in downtown Huntsville.

“Redwood as I understand is getting federal funding from HUD and there’s just no excuse for this,” said Kling.

Kling met with the tenants to ensure that city and state leaders would hold Redwood Communities accountable for their lack of action.

“It’s an absolute disgrace that our senior citizens should have to put up with this type of literally elder abuse by Redwood,” Kling said. “I think we’ve got some good things started, a good plan of action. We’ve identified a ringleader for the group, and she’s got a lot of documentation, so she’s going to contact HUD hopefully in the next day or so.”

Kling has contacted the Huntsville City Community Development Department as well as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development before the maintenance issues to try to stop things before conditions get worse.
