HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WHNT ) — The North Precinct of the Huntsville Police Department hosted its annual “Family Fun Night” to unite the public and build relationships between the community and the officers.

The event was held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dr. Robert Shurney Legacy Center on Sparkman Drive.

The event featured a bouncy house, a snow cone truck, free food and drinks and prize giveaways. One prize even included new bikes.

Tony McElyea, the North Precinct’s captain and commander, said his staff looks forward to this event each year as a way to get to know the community in a positive setting rather than when they are responding to calls.

“All too often, most of our interactions with the community is when someone is in a time of crisis, so getting to bring people in, to get to know us, not just the person who is wearing the uniform or badge, but the man or woman behind the badge is just as important,” McElyea said.

This is part of their monthly summer activities, and McElyea says you can expect to see an event like this each month in the summer.

Their last event of the year will be a Halloween fun night.
