West Virginia mother accused of killing 16-day-old baby

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. — The West Virginia State Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 16-day-old baby in Putnam County.

According to officials West Virginia State Police was dispatched to C.A.M.C. Women’s & Children’s Hospital regarding an unresponsive newborn that was transferred from Charles Court, in Hurricane.

Officials say an examination showed the baby suffered from multiple serious injuries, that medical professionals believed to be non accidental in nature.

Investigators interviewed the newborn’s mother, 33 year old Brooke Kessler of Hurricane, WV, determining the child received the injuries while in her custody.

Officials say Kessler was arrested on June 21 for Child Abuse Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Strangulation, and Malicious Assault.

According to reports the infants was taken off life support on June 23, and was pronounced dead.

Officials refiled criminal charges with the Putnam County Prosecuting Attorney, at this time Kessler was charged with Death of a Child by Parent of Guardian.

Officials say this investigation reamins active and is ongoing.
