PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. ( D C News Now ) — Black Restaurant Week is in full swing, and Prince George’s County is celebrating black-owned establishments across the county.

One restaurant that has seen support is Spice Kitchen in Hyattsville, a West African grill whose owner emphasized how important weeks like this are.

“It put us on the map in a pretty good way,” said Marcus Bryan.

He started the company with a friend he met at another job, and three years later they are bringing culture and food to the people of Prince George’s.

“People say, ‘You have African food?’ And they think all these things, but […] they really [changed the way] people think about African food,” said April Jordan, an employee who recently started at the restaurant.

The restaurant specializes in “Suya,” a West African spice that Bryan and his team made and has experimented with. Much to the liking of the customers, according to him.

“Lines out the door,” he said. “We’ve gained a lot of support from our fellow Black community members.”

Bryan said Prince George’s County’s massive Black population has helped not only him, but other Black-owned restaurants trying to be a part of the community.

“We’re very lucky down here because all we really do and know is Black,” he said. “Seeing the people you grew up with come in and try the food is a great feeling.”

Spice Kitchen also has a food truck in Bowie. Black Restaurant Week will continue until July 28.
