After months of surveys, applications reviews and interviews, the City of Boise has chosen a new police chief.

Mayor Lauren McLean announced on Aug. 5 that Chris Dennison accepted the offer to lead the city’s law enforcement department.

“Chris understands the special trust that must exist between a police department and the community it serves,” McLean said in a statement. “I am confident he will care for our officers and our residents, working collaboratively across the region to keep Boies a safe and welcoming city for everyone.”

The hiring process included focus groups and interviews with community leaders, the city stated, along with discussions with representatives from peer public safety agencies, union representatives, the mayor and city council. After narrowing down the applications, the top three candidates, which included Dennison, answered questions during community open houses.

“Throughout our conversations with Chris, we found him to be a thoughtful, collaborative and community-focused leader with a breadth of experience and commitment to our community policing model,” said Scott Schoenherr, a member of the selection committee.

Before even posting the job, the community was polled so that city leadership could understand the priorities of Boise, with 1,500 people completing the survey. The highest priorities were reducing crime and enhancing public safety. Respondents also preferred a police chief “who practices transparency, responds to community concerns and holds officers and staff accountable.”

Prior to being hired as Boise’s chief, Dennison was the assistant chief of police at the Tucson Police Department in Tucson, Arizona. In that position he led central investigations, the counter narcotics alliance and forensics. He worked at that agency for 20 years, starting as an officer in 2004.

Dennison said he was “honored” to join the Boise Police Department.

“I am passionate about building strong community relationships, enhancing public safety and leading a dedicated team of police professionals,” he said. “Boise is a vibrant and growing city, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the community to ensure it remains a safe and welcoming place for all residents.”

Dennison replaces the current chief of police, Ron Winegar, who is officially retiring on Sept. 20.
