The Borah girls softball team claimed their first-ever 5A State Championship on Saturday, beating defending state champion Owyhee 12-8 in a winner-take-all game.

The Lions (18-10) took a 10-1 lead with an eight-run fifth inning, then held off a late charge by the Storm. Abigail Gardner had an RBI double, Rylee Nelson drove in two runs on a double and Jody Hobson added another RBI before Olyvia Chalifoux added a three-run home run to cap the inning.

Owyhee (24-5), the tournament’s top seed, forced the winner-take-all game by beating the Lions 6-1 in the first game between the two teams. The Storm were upset by Coeur d’Alene in the first round of the double-elimination tournament, but won five straight elimination games, including a 4-2 win over Timberline on Saturday morning to advance to the championship.

COLE VALLEY BEATS MALAD TWICE TO WIN 2A STATE TITLE

The Cole Valley Christian Chargers are Dragon slayers.

The Chargers not only ended the Malad Dragons' 62-game unbeaten streak Saturday with an 8-2 victory, but they then beat the four-time defending state champions once again, 8-7, in eight innings to claim the 2A State Title.

Maren Brushy had the walk-off sacrifice fly to give Cole Valley its first state softball title. The Chargers won three games Saturday after falling to Malad 9-8 on Friday.

Cole Valley (25-6-1) started the day with a 10-5 win against New Plymouth, highlighted by a three-run home run by Lola Crosby during the Chargers’ five-run fourth inning.

In the first game against Malad, Karlie Barnum struck out 12 batters in the circle, then Cole Valey took a 7-2 lead in the fourth before a comeback effort from the Dragons, which was ended by Brushy’s walk-off sac fly.

BISHOP KELLY FALLS TWICE TO POCATELLO

Bishop Kelly lost two games to Pocatello, 15-2 and 3-1, to lose in the 4A championship.

The Knights (23-5) were looking to reclaim the title after falling last year, ending a run of three straight state titles.

Instead, they fell behind 5-0 in the first game Saturday and then managed just two hits in the winner-take-all game.

HOMEDALE FALLS LATE IN 3A CHAMPIONSHIP

Homedale was tied with Kimberly in the sixth inning before the Bulldogs scored six runs in the bottom half of the frame and eventually taking a 9-6 win to claim their second straight 3A State Title.

Olivia Asumendi and Lilly Trescot both had two RBIs for the Trojans (19-7) who needed to beat Kimberly twice to win their second state title in three years. Asumendi also had nine strikeouts in the circle.

Homedale got to the championship by beating Timberlake 16-12 earlier in the day. Zayne Hall had four RBIs, three on a first-inning home run, while Dani Sitts also drove in four runs.
