SODA SPRINGS — Not many classes offer creative outlets more than a good art class. A great art teacher can uniquely connect with a student to help them develop original ideas through creating art projects.

Of course, all kinds of art are appreciated and encouraged in Andy Berg’s art class at Soda Springs High School. Berg has been the art teacher for Soda Springs High for the last 10.5 years. Over the years he has taught many beginner artists to fall in the love with the world of art and has challenged the gifted artist to grow and develop further.

Berg is holding his semi-annual Art Exhibition at Caribou Jack's in Soda Springs where students have the opportunity to display their one-of-a-kind art projects for the community.

“All are invited to come and share an evening with us,” Berg said. “There will be many drawings and paintings, but expect the unexpected with some unpredictable pieces, like dragons emerging from a book, a pallet wood basketball hoop, and an 8-foot long charcoal drawing. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this!”

You can support the Art Exhibition at Caribou Jack's in Soda Springs, 50 East Second South on Thursday, May 16, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Berg knew from a very young age art would be a forever part of his life. By the age of four, his favorite thing to do was draw the Ninja Turtles and monsters. Many family members were so encouraging of his talent but especially his Grandma Edna, who was also a gifted artist. Berg was often told he must have inherited his grandma’s talents.

Berg knew going into college there was nothing more he wanted to do than get an art degree. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Idaho State University. Upon graduating from ISU, Berg had the opportunity to work as a graphic designer for a snowboard/wakeboard company but was short lived when a teaching opportunity opened at Soda Springs High and he soon realized he was meant to teach. Berg was hired and quickly returned to ISU to receive his teaching certificate.

“My favorite thing about teaching art is it’s natural way to make honest connections with people,” Berg said. “For some reason when you create something your guard goes down, and you are more willing to let people see something deeper about yourself. I love this about my job. I love feeling like I’m making a difference that goes beyond art and into the heart. This job makes it easy to go to work and enjoy what I’m doing. It feels meaningful.”

One thing Berg is valued for is he allows students free reign on their ideas and then supports those creative minds. Creativity is contagious when taking Berg’s art class and most realize fast the only failure in his class is simply not trying.
