    Some incumbents lose in local county commission primary races

    Local voters went to the polls to choose their ideal candidates for several elected county offices throughout the region during Tuesday's primary, with shakeups to the Bannock, Bingham and Bear Lake county commissions being the most noteworthy outcomes.

    There were four primary battles in Bannock County, including GOP and Democratic District 3 commissioner races, the race for Republican District 1 commissioner and the race for the Republican nomination for prosecutor.

    Incumbent Republican District 3 Commissioner in Bannock County John Crowder faced off against former Bannock County Commissioner Ken Bullock.

    Bullock secured a chance to try and join the commission again after defeating Crowder by 50 votes. Bullock secured 50.38 percent, or 3,318 votes, while Crowder secured 49.62 percent of the vote, or 3,268 votes.

    Tamara Code defeated her opponent David Archuleta in the Democratic primary for District 3 commissioner. Code secured 57.05 percent of the vote, or 943 votes, to Archuleta’s 42.95 percent, or 710 votes.

    Bullock and Code will face off for the District 3 commissioner seat in the November general election.

    Incumbent Republican District 1 Commissioner in Bannock County Ernie Moser faced a challenge from Larry Burden.

    Moser won, securing 54.89 percent of the vote, or 3,594 votes, to Burden’s 45.11 percent, or 2,954 votes.

    Republican Bannock County prosecutor candidates Erin Tognetti and Ian Johnson battled for the chance to face Democrat Jennifer Call in the general election in November.

    Johnson won, securing 63.48 percent, or 4,038 votes, while Tognetti secured 36.52 percent of the vote, or 2,323 votes.

    In Bingham County, incumbent Republican District 1 Commissioner Mark Bair faced two primary challenges from Drew Jensen and Stephen Woolf.

    Jensen narrowly won, defeating both opponents. He secured 42.10 percent, or 2,852 votes, while Bair secured 41.52 percent, or 2,813 votes. Woolf secured 16.38 percent, or 1,110 votes.

    Bingham County incumbent Republican District 3 Commissioner Eric Jackson squared off against Will Aullman.

    Jackson won, securing 52.68 percent, or 3,421 votes, while Aullman received 47.32 percent, or 3,073 votes.

    Incumbent Bingham County Sheriff Jeff Gardner soundly defeated challenger Jim Barbre.

    Gardner secured 83.92 percent, or 5,718 votes, while Barbre received 16.08 percent, or 1,096 votes.

    In Power County, District 1 Commissioner Ron Funk and District 3 Commissioner Delane Anderson chose not to seek reelection.

    Robyn Adkins, Launa Lee Snow and Jason Todd Povey were all vying for the Republican nomination for District 1 commissioner.

    Povey narrowly defeated both candidates in a close three-way race. Povey secured 35.81 percent, or 381 votes, Adkins secured 35.53 percent, or 378 votes, and Snow secured 28.67 percent, or 305 votes.

    Chris Fehringer and Kade Smith, both Republicans, battled each other for the District 3 commissioner seat.

    Fehringer won, securing 54.87 percent, or 586 votes, and Smith received 45.13 percent, or 482 votes.

    Caribou County incumbent Republican District 3 Commissioner Mark Mathews squared off against Kim Spencer.

    Mathews defeated his opponent, securing 63.15 percent, or 1,006 votes. Spencer received 36.85 percent, or 587 votes.

    Incumbent Republican Caribou County Sheriff Adam Mabey faced a challenge from Eric Bates.

    Mabey won, securing 76.68 percent, or 1,246 votes, and Bates received 23.32 percent, or 379 votes.

    Jonathan Housley was the appointed coroner in Caribou County and decided not to run for election, but two Republicans battled for the nomination on Tuesday, Casey Batterton and Nita Weber.

    Batterton won, securing 55.73 percent, or 880 votes, while Weber received 44.27 percent, or 699 votes.

    Incumbent Republican District 1 Commissioner in Bear Lake County Brad Jensen faced primary challengers Alan Eborn and Kathy Hemmert.

    Eborn ended up winning the contest with 683 votes, or 45 percent, compared to Jensen's 620 votes, or 41 percent, and Hemmert's 212 votes, or 14 percent.

    Incumbent Republican District 3 Commissioner in Bear Lake County Wynn Olsen faced off against Tracy Park.

    Olsen easily won the contest with 1,064 votes, or 71 percent, compared to Park's 436 votes, or 29 percent.
