POCATELLO — Back for its 20th season, the annual Idaho Field of Heroes is returning to Century High School in Pocatello this Memorial Day weekend.

According to a news release from Bannock County, Field of Heroes will start on Friday, May 24, and will end on Memorial Day, May 27. It will be held at the soccer field at Century High School.

Melissa Hartman, Bannock County Veteran Services Coordinator, said the event is something that always brings the community together.

“We aren’t different political parties, organizations or companies,” she said in the news release. “We are just citizens enjoying the freedom paid for by the men and women represented in the field.”

To honor the men and women who died serving the United States in the Global War on Terrorism, there are 7,064 markers for each service member who died while serving in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Another 97 are dedicated to Idaho service members who died since the events on September 11, 2001.

The beloved Memorial Day weekend event will start with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday. It will be open to the public 24 hours a day until the closing ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

The annual Run to Remember will take place on Saturday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at the Century High School track. Anyone interested in participating can register at 9:30 a.m. for a $10 donation to support the Memorial.

According to the news release, the first 70 participants will receive a free T-shirt and goodie bag. This year, the Run to Remember is sponsored by Snaptight Products.

Food will be provided at the Coca-Cola trailer on Sunday and Monday.

Other events that will take place during Field of Heroes include a youth ceremony at 6 p.m. on Friday, children’s activities at 12 p.m. on Saturday and a USO Show and Stasia Acrobats performance later in the day Saturday. A musical event will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

After the musical event, the Silent Wounds Candlelight Vigil will take place at 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. At 1:30 p.m. on Monday, a “Retire with Respect” Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held by the POW-MIA Awareness Association.

According to the news release, the Thunder Run Tribute will be held at 5:15 p.m. on Monday, May 27, and the Closing Ceremony will take place after.
