POCATELLO — A city block near Idaho State University was closed to traffic Wednesday night after a water main break created a massive crater in the road.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. on the 200 block of South Seventh Avenue between East Lewis and East Bonneville streets.

The water main break caused the road to flood with water and created a large crater measuring about 10 feet wide, 30 feet long and 4 feet deep on South Seventh.

City public works crews immediately shut down South Seventh and began trying to make the necessary repairs to stop the flow of water.

The main was repaired and water was turned back on around 11 p.m. Wednesday and the road was reopened an hour later, city officials said.
