POCATELLO — A 21-year-old woman was recently arrested after police say she attacked officers and then tried to bribe them after they attempted to place her in protective custody for being too intoxicated.

Kalli Rami Sam, of Pocatello, has been charged with one count of battery on a police officer and one count of bribery of a municipal official, both felonies, as well as misdemeanor possession of marijuana following the Thursday incident.

Pocatello police were dispatched to the Super 8 Motel around 11:50 p.m. on Thursday for the report of a woman, later identified as Sam, making threats toward other guests and employees as well as refusing to leave the property, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

Upon arrival, officers located Sam in the parking lot of the motel, said police, adding that she appeared visibly intoxicated and was holding a bottle of Budweiser in her hand.

Sam told officers that she was asked to leave and was fine doing that but wanted to go back inside her room to shower and pass out, the report says.

The employees of the front desk told officers that Sam needed to leave the premises for the night and that no criminal charges would be sought against her, police said.

Officers informed Sam of this and she left the property, heading toward the Phillips 66 gas station about a block away from the motel, according to the report.

Another officer who was already at the gas station for an unrelated call then informed other officers via radio that Sam was beginning to cause a scene at that location, the report says.

Officers arrived on scene and were informed that Sam was attempting to solicit gas station customers for money or alcohol, police said. Sam told officers that her plan for the evening was to have a friend come and pick her up, said police, adding that she failed to reach anyone after using the officer’s phone to call at least three people.

With no clear plans for the evening and her level of intoxication, officers informed Sam that she would be placed in alcohol protective custody and taken to the jail until she could sober up, the report says.

When officers attempted to detain her in handcuffs she resisted and was taken to the ground, police said. In the process of being taken to the ground, Sam stuck the officer in the face with her right hand, the report says.

While on the ground, Sam continued to wrestle with officers, grabbing the officer’s microphone cord with both hands and refusing to let go, police said. Eventually, one of the officers deployed tased Sam in order to get her to let go, the report says.

Finally, Sam was placed in handcuffs, though she continued to scratch and grab at anyone who got close to her, police said.

Sam was then placed in a WRAP restraint device and began to scream at officers that she was going to fight them, specifically asking for their personal information so she could find them when they were not working, the report says.

Once Sam was placed in the back of a police car and an officer began transporting her to the Bannock County Jail in Pocatello she offered the officer between $1,000 and $15,000 to let her go, police said.

Officers also located a small amount of marijuana on her person.

Sam was then later booked inside the jail.

She appeared in front of 6th District Magistrate Judge Aaron Thompson, during which her bond was set at $10,000.

Sam is due back in court on Aug. 21 for a preliminary hearing that will involve local prosecutors attempting to prove there is enough evidence against her to elevate the case from the magistrate to district court level for trial.

If convicted of the two felony charges filed against her, she faces up to 19 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
