POCATELLO — City public works crews have repaired a water main that suffered a breach Saturday evening in a Pocatello neighborhood, shutting down streets and causing flood damage to multiple homes.

The water main breach at West Maple Street and Moreland Avenue near the Westwood Mall occurred around 7 p.m. Saturday when an old 12-inch cross fitting came apart, the city reported.

City public works crews and the Pocatello Fire Department responded and temporarily shut down both streets because of the flooding caused by the breach.

The breach also caused a crater to form at the intersection of West Maple and Moreland.

The damaged water main was repaired and water service restored to the neighborhood on Sunday morning but the intersection of West Maple and Moreland remains closed for safety reasons and so city crews can repair a storm drain damaged during the incident, the city reported.

The city is hoping to have the intersection back open on Tuesday.

The water main breach caused flood damage in the basements of at least three homes in the neighborhood.

On Monday city crews also cleaned up much of the mud that accumulated on the streets and sidewalks during the flooding.
