Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles Retires As An Eagle

Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles announced his retirement from football as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday (August 8).

Foles, 35, was selected by the Eagles in the third-round of the 2012 NFL Draft and spent five years with the franchise during two separate tenures, the latter of which included taking over for injured starter Carson Wentz during the 2017 season and leading Philadelphia to its only Super Bowl victory in franchise history.

"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle," Foles said in a video announcing his retirement. "The City of Brotherly Love has always felt like home to me as an NFL player. Philadelphia is a city I truly love, and it has been an honor to wear the Eagles jersey. Thank you, Philadelphia, for embracing me and making me a part of your family forever. Your love and support have meant the world. Fly, Eagles, Fly!"

Foles threw for 373 yards, three touchdowns and one interceptions on 28 of 43 passing caught the now famous 'Philly Special' touchdown pass in the Eagles' Super Bowl LII win against the New England Patriots.

Foles was initially lined up behind center Jason Kelce before moving to the right while acting like he was calling an audible, at which point Kelce snapped the ball directly to running back Corey Clement , who pitched it to tight end Trey Burton , who completed the one-yard pass to Foles to give the Eagles a 22-12 halftime lead.

Foles became the first backup quarterback to win the Super Bowl since Tom Brady , his opponent in Super Bowl LII, did so during his second season with the Patriots. The former University of Arizona standout also had stints with the then-St. Louis Rams (2015), Kansas City Chiefs (2016), Jacksonville Jaguars (2019), Chicago Bears (2020-2021) and Indianapolis Colts (2022).

The Eagles will honor Foles during their regular season home opener against the Atlanta Falcons on September 16.
